Our Space Launch and Exploration Business Unit has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Electrical Design Engineer to lead both customer-facing activities along with design activities in Huntsville, AL.  In this position, you will lead trade studies and development of system architectures for a variety of platforms geared for the space market. There will be a heavy emphasis on power electronics.  You may also be called upon to provide leadership to a cross-functional team for design and development of Launch Vehicle/Satellite Control Electronics and Power Management products. 

As the Staff Electrical Design Engineer, you will work on: 
  • Review, interpret, and support the creation of customer specifications in order to design thrust vector actuation control system electronic controllers, valve drivers, power converters, supplies, EMI filters and power management systems. These systems operate from 28V up to 800 VDC and power levels to 50KW.  This part of the role will require partnering with our sales team to solidify relationships with our customers, helping to educate our customers on the advantages of Moog designed products, and also influencing the requirements included in an RFP prior to that RFP being issued to the public.
  • Work with and function as a lead for the electrical design team. The role will require managing, setting objectives into tactical terms and verifying efforts of the circuit designers, thermal analysts, packaging engineers, firmware design engineers, circuit board layout designers, EMI/EMC design engineers, systems engineers, and test engineers/technicians.
  • Provide high performance, cost conscious electronic designs including: analog and digital circuit design. Magnetic design of inductors and transformers and custom power devices such as hybrids, power switches, current sensors and passive devices. Strong knowledge of  a variety of small 5W to large 10KW power supply design topologies, A/D and D/A circuitry, and trapezoidal and Space vector modulated brushless DC motor drives and of a variety of current sense and gate drive design methodologies. 
  • As a subject matter expert, you will work closely with other subject matter experts to jointly define requirements and implementation of the entire system of platform and by staying current with industry trends and through customer interaction contribute to tech roadmaps
  • Design, simulate, and analyze circuitry; perform analyses such as tolerance, component derating, power, BIT coverage, stability, EMI/EMC, etc.
  • Perform initial prototype testing, integration testing, and design verification / validation. Test and troubleshoot electronics, electronic subsystems and circuit cards. 
  • Specify and support the design and development of test equipment and test setups.
  • Interact with customers on a professional and technical level to help drive the requirements and design to a successful Technical/Cost/Schedule solution.
  • Provide formal technical presentations at trade shows and to customers for program reviews and with business development.
  • Support and lead business unit bid and proposal efforts with cost estimates and technical write-ups.
 Minimum Requirements: 
  • MSEE (BSEE will be considered with experience)
  • Minimum, 10+ years motor/servomechanism controller and power conversion design experience in the Aerospace Industry
  • Motivated individual who can work in both office and lab environments equally well
  • Military / Aerospace / DoD program design experience
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of Cadence/Allegro design tools including circuit models
  • Detailed knowledge of AC and DC Converter/Inverter, EMI filter design experience in a Space radiation-hardened environment and experience in designing magnetics (inductors, transformers, etc.)
  • Experience with various Motor Controller Design Topologies (ie PWM Gate Drives)
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain a government security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiar with EMI/EMC Mil-STD 461 requirements and circuit implementation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Hi-Rel EEE Component Selection/Design/Screening requirements

Travel Requirements – Up to 25% or at least once per quarter is typical.
