Machine Operator (2nd Shift)

Moog Space & Defense Group in Blacksburg, VA is looking for a skilled, hardworking, and dedicate Machine Operator. 


Here’s what you can expect in this role:

  • Perform basic drill press, lathe, milling machine, and grinding operations
  • Responsible for the care, use, and application of various turning/plunge and form tools
  • Operate shear vise, tapping machine (manual and power), and understand different styles and types of taps and dies (metric and standard)
  • Operate various types of power hand tools, grinders, drills, belt sanders, and disc sanders, sand and bead blasters
  • Operate and understand power band saw, cut off saw, proper selection of speeds, feeds, tooth size, blade welding, guide setting, and blade replacement
  • Completion of required paperwork necessary in the job
  • Cleaning assembly and various other tasks as required and ability to verify work completed meets requirements of blueprints, standards and work instructions
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Here’s what you will need to be part of the team:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, with at least one year completion of an approved vocational program in Machine Technology or equivalent
  • To be self-motivated and have the ability to multi-task
  • To be proficient in general math (use of fractions, decimals, simple formulas and charts)
  • To be able to lift at least 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to use Machine Shop Gauges and machines
  • Knowledge in blue print reading and geometric tolerances
  • Zero to two years related machining experience required

Preferred knowledge and skills:

  • Working knowledge using Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry
  • Demonstrated experience using lean manufacturing in a machine shop setting
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are currently enrolled or who have completed a related apprenticeship program or field of study
