Job Summary:

Reporting directly to the Aircraft Group Vice President of Finance, the Group IT Director has accountability for providing leadership and vision on how IT can drive improvements to the AG business through cost effective technology solutions. 


The Group IT Director will be a key active participant in the Aircraft Group Leadership Team ensuring technology, IT solutions and initiatives are fully integrated with the Group’s business objectives, priorities, strategies, and mission, by working closely with Group and Corporate functions to assess present and future business needs and direction. These inputs inform the development of an IT Strategy that through successful execution fulfills those needs.


The Group IT Director will play an important role in enterprise strategic technology projects, including Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), and our Aerospace ERP implementation on SAP S/4HANA, which is charged to drive commonality of processes and data throughout the business.  These are multi-year endeavors and substantial investments for our business. The Group IT Director, working in conjunction with the Space & Defense Group and Corporate IT teams, will be responsible for aiding in the successful rollout of these systems to Aircraft Group sites. The role will also play an important role in managing the Aircraft Group IT investment portfolio, and helping to drive the business towards full adoption of these platforms, while using effective portfolio management practices to minimize investment on smaller point solutions.


The Group IT Director will work closely with the Enterprise CIO through the Global IT Leadership Team (GITLT) to help lead the delivery of IT products, projects, and services. This includes strategy, processes, organizational design, and governance frameworks. The Group IT Director and other members of the GITLT should be seen as a valued business partner, working together in the interest of the Company overall.


1. Strategic Vision - Ensuring that IT plans are defined to meet the requirements of the business. This includes the development of roadmaps for solutions, platforms, architecture and infrastructure that are constructed to support global businesses and in alignment with Aircraft Group business strategy. These roadmaps must reflect key technology and business trends. The Group IT Director is responsible for:

  • Monitoring and interpreting technology and business trends so that the IT function can proactively ensure that the appropriate technology and solutions are available to meet the changing business needs.
  • Assist developing the maturity of the IT organization, moving IT to a position in which it is seen as a key enabler of the business.
  • Maximizes the efficiency of running basic IT functionality while shifting a greater portion of resources to business differentiation and innovation initiatives.
  • Actively contributing to the development and execution of the enterprise digital strategy through engagement with the CIO and GITLT.

2. Value Creation – Ensuring that IT adds business value by

  • Deploying solutions that enable the business to optimize processes,
  • Reshaping our transaction of business with customers and suppliers,
  • Providing relevant and timely information to improve operational decision making.
  • Working across the enterprise to align resources and investments with strategic objectives that add value to the Aircraft Group business

3. Effective Execution - Ensuring that IT solutions deliver the expected business values and are deployed on budget and on schedule.


4. Operational Excellence – Ensuring all business processes are supported with the appropriate level of performance, availability, reliability, security and disaster recovery, through the development of associated strategies and service levels. Ensuring that service delivery and training is consistent globally, regardless of location. Ensuring the development and control of Group IT budgets (staff, operational expenditure, and capital expenditure) and influencing Corporate IT budgets.


5. Managing – Working through direct reports, the Group IT Director is responsible for creating an environment in line with our culture that supports individuals in their role, as well as their development within the company.  The Group IT Director will:

  • Delegate operational decision-making to responsible managers (or teams) and hold them accountable for delivering the desired and agreed-upon objectives in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure talent management within IT to support development of IT maturity and succession planning.
  • Set clear expectations (objectives) for reports, and provide relevant and timely feedback on performance.
  • Regularly communicate business performance and strategic direction to all Group IT staff and Group Leadership.
  • Participate in IT talent pipeline development across the enterprise, including mentoring.

6. Policies, Regulatory and Compliance - The Group IT Director is accountable to ensure that necessary and appropriate IT policies, standards, and procedures exist. The Group IT Director is responsible to see that these are developed, implemented, reviewed, and maintained.  The incumbent also provides sufficient training, documentation and controls to ensure that Group systems meet all Corporate, statutory, contractual and legal requirements.


7. Risk Management – The Group IT Director is responsible for IT risk assessment, and remediation planning and execution.  This includes Cyber Security, Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity, and Compliance.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Group IT is a globally distributed function that supports business entities in multiple countries with an effective 24 x 7 x 365 operation.
  • The Group IT Director must demonstrate persuasive skills with senior Group and Corporate leadership in order to accomplish objectives.
  • The Group IT Director exercises substantial control over the continuity and effectiveness of IT systems by planning, monitoring, coordinating, and supporting all required activities.
  • IT supports and enables all business functions within the Company (e.g. Engineering, Operations, HR, Sales, and Finance). Therefore, knowledge of how IT can add value to each discipline is critical.
  • IT plays an increasingly significant role in enabling the operation of a growing global business. The strategic intent is to install a set of systems, platforms and architectures which will allow for as much Enterprise-wide convergence as is possible, while still being capable of fulfilling the specific local market, line of business, regulatory or legal requirements. The Group IT Director is responsible for supporting the organization’s direction, thereby maximizing the benefits the Company receives from its IT investments.
  • Travel is a significant part of the job. The incumbent will need to stay connected to key Group Sites to ensure that the required levels of services are available to meet business requirements.
 Basic Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a senior IT leadership role with direct business engagement.
  • Significant proven and relevant IT and industry experience is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate an appropriate balance of strong IT and business acumen.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Business.  Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven capabilities in managing and working collaboratively within a multicultural, geographically dispersed environment.
  • Significant engagement with large and complex IT projects (plan, organize, deliver).
  • Significant experience in budgeting and IT Finance/Cost Management and driving IT value.
  • The ability to influence thinking or to convince other leaders to change strongly held opinions.
  • Background in aerospace & defense or manufacturing environment is desirable
