Engineering Section Manager

The Space Access and Integrated Systems (SAIS) Business Unit is a preferred provider of affordable component and system solutions to the global space access and exploration community.  These products include: Thrusters, Propulsion Systems and Fluid Control Hardware for the four market segments: Commercial, Civil, Department of Defense and New Space. The need for this section head is in response to the current and future growth in business for SAIS.  This section head will report to the Engineering Manager for Propulsion and Fluid Control.  Responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and coordination of all the engineering resources necessary to support the propulsion and fluid control activities associated with the SAIS business unit.  This includes Bid and Proposal, Sales Support, Firm Projects, IR&D and Forecasted activities.

  • Provide the necessary engineering leadership and management of critical development programs. Focus on on-time-delivery of engineering products and services and continuous improvement of engineering processes and methods.

  • Provide functional leadership for the Propulsion and Fluid Controls Design Engineering and Project Engineering members aligned with the valve and component business.

  • Provide compassionate and reliable engineering leadership to a group of engineers that routinely support the SAIS business.  This includes the continued development of existing staff as well as the on-boarding and development of new staff as required.

  • Provide technical leadership for the business by developing and maintaining technology roadmaps, management of IR&D projects and understanding customer needs. 

The successful candidate should have the following Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated engineering leadership skills, a continued desire to utilize these skills and the ability to mentor and coach other engineers to achieve leadership on complex development and production projects.

  • Have the ability to understand new technical concepts and products.  Utilize these skills to understand program risks and take appropriate actions with the assigned project team to mitigate these risks.  Use a system engineering approach to manage development activities.

  • Ability to gather data and utilize this data to make decisions to continuously improve the business.  If data does not exist, work with the appropriate stakeholders to generate the data to support strong business decisions.

  • 15 years of engineering experience with the design, development and production support of complex hardware.  5 years of engineering management experience desired.  Experience with the spacecraft and launch vehicle fluid management devices is desired but not essential. 

Other Considerations:

  • The propulsion and fluid control engineering function operates across 3 business units (Missiles, Spacecraft Controls and Space Access and Integrated Systems) and several sites including East Aurora, Niagara Falls and collaboration with Golden Co and Mountain View CA.  This role requires coordination with other section heads who have responsibilities for these businesses and sites.
  • This role is located in East Aurora, New York.

Travel Requirements: Travel to other Moog sites, customer sites, and trade shows (primarily US based) is required.  Estimated travel is one trip per month.
