Electronic Packaging Design Engineer

As an (Staff/Sr) Electrical Packaging Engineer you'll be responsible for the development of complex, highly reliable motor drives and control electronics that will become the new Moog products for the defense sector of the Space and Defense Group. The products to keep you challenged range from fractional HP to 80 HP, with currents up to 500 amps and voltages to 800 volts. They may be in a separate enclosure, a pressure tolerant housing or integral to an actuator. Leveraging your experience you'll act as the lead or a team lead in the design of the electronic boxes for missiles, autonomous underwater vehicles and numerous ground vehicles.

This opportunity will allow the engineer to be a leader and to be solely in charge of the design, development and test of control actuation system electronics drives from a packaging perspective.

In the defense sector of Space and Defense, designs move rapidly from inception to fielding. Typical programs may last less than a year, thus opportunity exists to continuously work on new projects with different design needs, to learn new areas in electrical packaging design and to collaborate with some of Moog’s best engineers.

In this position you’ll be expected to:

Work alone or as part of a team, you will be a primary contributor to the (structural and thermal) analysis, conceptual design, development, and testing of complex hardware. The products of Moog generally are unique for each customer. Therefore, most new applications require a special, tailored design, even though adaptation of existing designs should be considered where appropriate. You will generally operate as part of a design/development team, which includes other department engineers (electrical and systems engineers). You must effectively help in coordinating the work of drafters and others who assist in specific assignments.

In the early stages of a new program the project team will consult with the customer, establish the problem statement, conceive of potential hardware solutions to the problem (often through extensive trade studies) and then create a successful technical proposal. This phase is critical in that it establishes the basis for future design, and for contract negotiations. Under the technical direction of the Engineering Manager, Section Head or the team's lead engineer, you'll then guide the evolution of the conceptual design, technical project planning, detail design, and development testing. This requires some travel and the participation in presentations to customers.


Here is an idea of what you'll be accountable for:


  1. Lead the development of new electrical products requirements through consulting with customers and sales personnel.
  2. Validate conceptual problem solutions by performing trade studies and analyses.
  3. Be the primary contributor in the preparation of successful proposal designs, cost estimates, and technical volume write ups.
  4. Operate as a participant in a team of creative, independent and cross-functional individuals.
  5. Represent Moog in a manner consistent with its technical reputation.
  6. Create reliable designs through a comprehensive experimental development test program.
  7. Document designs, analyses, and test results with accurate and concise reports.


**Please note Salary and pay grade could be a H11 (Electronic Packaging Engineer), C1 (Sr Electronic Packaging Engineer) or C2 (Staff Electronic Packaging Engineer depending on experience and education. 

In addition to the above experience you’ll need:

  • To be considered for the position of Electronic Packaging Engineer, a candidate should have a minimum of an BS Degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering plus five years of design/development engineering experience.

  • To be considered for the position of Sr Electronic Packaging Engineer, a candidate should have a minimum of an MS Degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering plus seven years of design/development engineering experience.

  • To be considered for the position of Staff Electronic Packaging Engineer, a candidate should have a minimum of an MS Degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering plus 15 years of design/development engineering experience.

  • Vibration and thermal design experience a must. Working knowledge of designing EMI/EMC for MIL-STD-461 preferred.

  • Experience with Hi-Rel EEE Component Selection/Design/Screening requirements.
