Moog Space and Defense Group in East Aurora, NY is looking for a Business Scouting Engineer.

Innovation has been at the core of Moog since our inception.  The Technology and Advanced Pursuits (TAP) Team is continuing that legacy as Moog increases its expertise in electrification, autonomous and IOT systems.  As a Business Scouting Engineer (BSE) you will lead Moog’s innovation efforts focused in developing new markets and business models for products outside of Moog’s core product offering.  The Business Scouting Engineer (BSE) has external and internal technical and business responsibilities relating to the pursuit of emerging technologies in a start-up like atmosphere.  This requires a wide range of business knowledge combined with technology expertise (systems/mechanical/electrical/software) enable the BSE to introduce Moog as a next-gen problem solver to potential customers. The BSE will help shape Moog’s strategy as we build customer focused solutions based on future problems to be solved.

The BSE role is a high visibility position within Moog crossing many operating groups.  In addition to understanding the technology required to solve customer’s challenges, the BSE will have responsibility for validating business growth opportunities by managing minimum viable product efforts.  The BSE will interact with customers, research market trends, develop business plans, support detailed development efforts, create business partnerships and advocate for opportunities with Moog Senior Management.

What you’ll be working on day to day:

  • Working with potential customers to discover their challenges and how the technology Moog is developing can provide solutions
  • Tracking emerging technologies; continuous refinement of technology development strategy and staying abreast of trends
  • Coordination with Moog business unit leaders to understand applications with Moog’s existing network of customers and present a consistent picture of technology development at Moog
  • Development of business case for opportunities; defining the market, development costs and schedules
  • Advocating for opportunities internally to multiple levels of Moog management
  • Monitoring other organizations active in emerging technology; sources of collaboration and competition
  • Authoring RFI/RFP responses

What you’ll need to bring with you:

  • Strong technical background (engineering degree and design experience); ability to understand and contribute to solutions for our customers
  • Networking capabilities: The BSE is the key interface between Moog’s technologists and customers.  The BSE is also a liaison between the TAP Team and Space and Defense business units.
  • Previous with emerging technologies: autonomy, AI, machine learning and IoT
  • Ability to travel in support of customer demonstrations and visit suppliers with balance of external and internal focus of the role

Additional preferred qualifications:

  • ME/ EE/ or Systems Engineering Degree; MBA or significant finance background
  • 8 -10 years of related experience and proven leadership capabilities
  • Previous networking experience with NASA, DoD, DARPA, and/or US Military
  • Customer focus and proven ability to interface with customer’s technical procurement and program staff
